Iconic New York City is often featured in holiday movies for good reason; the sights, sounds, and smells of the season take over the bustling city. Family activities abound as locals and tourists alike take in all that New York has to over during Christmas. Check out some of these favorite options when making holiday plans.
Macy’s Santaland
Take the kids to give their Christmas requests straight to the big guy at Macy’s Santaland. The 13,000 square foot display features prancing reindeer, caroling snowmen, plenty of holiday decorations, and Santa. Children can wait in line to tell Santa what they most desire while being entertained with holiday fun.
Wollman Rink
While ice skating at Rockefeller Center under the grandeur of the traditional tree may be what most people picture, the line, and crowds often make the place less than ideal. Wollman Rink features a beautiful view of the New York skyline with shorter lines than Rockefeller. After skating, stroll through the park and enjoy watching the penguins race at the Central Park Zoo.
The New York Botanical Garden Holiday Train Show
Go bigger than a simple train going around the tree at the Holiday Train Show. The show features a half-mile of track where trains zip down repeatedly. More than 150 landmark replicas, such as the Statue of Liberty and Grand Central Terminal, are made out of plant materials. Kids of all ages will enjoy the nostalgia and sights during the show.
The Nutcracker
Though the evening show runs a little late for young children, the matinee showing of The Nutcracker makes for a perfect evening activity. The classical ballet, as performed by The New York City Ballet, brings in the holiday spirit and magic each time it is performed. Get tickets early as shows tend to sell out quickly.
Dyker Heights
While many people enjoy decorating their homes for the holidays, this neighborhood goes a step above with their unspoken holiday light contest. Legend says that in the 1980s, a woman put over-the-top Christmas decor on her house. Her upset neighbors tried to outdo, and the result is a spectacular neighborhood event. Grab a hot cocoa and enjoy the incredible decorations and lights.
